A Staten Island woman says she can't get back into her home because of damage to the house next door -- and the owner is nowhere to be found. NY1's Aaron Dickens filed the following report.

Veronica Skibinski isn't allowed to enter her Midland Beach home because the house next door may fall down.

But Skibinski says she hasn't seen the neighbor that lives in the house since Sandy swept through.

"They don't seem to care," Skibinski said. "They haven't been gutting their house. They haven't looked like they are making any repairs to it."

We called the number listed for the owner of the house but it was disconnected.

Skibinski's says when she calls the Department of Buildings they tell her to call back later.

Meanwhile, she has been sleeping on her sister's couch.

"It's been taking a very big toll on her -- it's extremely stressful. She can't sleep," said Skibinski's sister Elizabeth Meens. "Every time she comes down here there is something new on the door all due to the house next door."

On Nov. 8, Skibinski received a yellow tag and she was able to begin work in her home.

She spent thousands of dollars gutting her home and was in the process of getting her heat and electricity back on. But then, on Nov. 25, she got the red tag.

DOB officials say they have done follow up inspections on both properties. They say Skibinski's home and her neighbor's house are both leaning on each other and need to be structurally reinforced.

Skibinski says that was not indicated on her tag and she wants the city to step in and stabilize the building.

"Something should be done by somebody, I just can't find out who," she said. "After hundreds of phone calls and no answers I just don't know where to turn to anymore."

DOB officials say if Skibinski's neighbor is unwilling or unable to do the work, the city will step in and reinforce it.

They are still looking into how long that will take.

In the meantime, Skibinski says she is praying for a miracle.
