New Yorkers celebrated the first night of Hanukkah on a larger-than-life scale Saturday night, as two giant menorahs were lit, one at Fifth Avenue and 59th Street in Manhattan and the other at Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn.

Cherry pickers were needed just to make it up to the tops of the menorahs and to get from the first candle to the second.

Hanukkah commemorates the Jewish uprising against the Greek-Syrian kingdom in the second century B.C.

The lighting of the menorah symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness, after oil that was only supposed to last one night lasted for eight.

Hanukkah runs through December 16.
