Board Of Election Still Counts Last Month's Affidavit Ballots

One month after New Yorkers hit the polls, the city's Board of Elections still has not certified the results, as staffers are still counting affidavit ballots, well past the December 1 deadline.

Last month's election was marred by long lines, equipment breakdowns and confusion at polling places.

Hurricane Sandy only made matters worse, as 61 polling sites had to be relocated following the storm.

Board of Elections officials are blaming the vote certification delays on Governor Andrew Cuomo's last-minute executive order allowing hurricane victims to cast an affidavit ballot anywhere in the city.

Some board members have suggested early voting for future elections, but that would require the approval of the state Legislature.
