A 35-year-old construction worker was killed in the Bronx Tuesday when a crane malfunctioned, causing an industrial air conditioner to fall on him. NY1's Erin Clarke filed the following report.

Around 10:30 a.m., workers with the energy-serving company Agrekko were removing a temporary air conditioner that Bronx Lebanon hospital had been using since May.

But a chain attached to the crane snapped and the machinery fell on Michael Mananghaya.

"All you hear was snap," said Joseph Contreras, who witnessed the accident. "Like he was saying, 'move it this way, move it this way.' Snap. Like that. Gave out, that's it, boom."

It took about two and a half hours for rescue workers to remove Mananghaya from behind the cooling unit.

"The floors started shaking," Contreras said. "They tried to hook the crane back up but it was too late."

Hospital officials say Mananghaya was dead by the time they got there.

"The wooden planks gave out and then the crane gave out and it smashed him," Contreras said. "He was gone instantaneously."

Aggreko is based out of the United Kingdom and employs 6,000 people worldwide.

A company spokesman said this was the first fatal industrial accident in the company's history and that everyone is in shock.

Aggreko released a statement saying that their hearts go out to Mananghaya's family.

They also said that a full investigation is ongoing.
