New Yorkers In Storm-Damaged Areas Urged To Be Wary Of Crooked Contractors

Governor Andrew Cuomo is urging New Yorkers to protect themselves from potential scam artists preying on Sandy victims.

Before agreeing to any repairs, residents should be wary of:

• Anyone who comes to a home uninvited or makes an unsolicited call offering to make repairs.

• Anyone who says repairs must be done immediately or who pressures potential customers to sign a contract.

• A deal or discount that sounds too good to be true.

When hiring a contractor, residents should check for references and receive multiple estimates on the home repairs needed.

The customers should insist on a written contract and they should not sign it until they fully understand payments and the services they are receiving.

To report a scam, contact a lawyer or the Department of Financial Services.

New Yorkers can also file a complaint with the Department of State at 1-800-697-1220 or at dos.ny.gov.
