A Gerritsen Beach father and son are spending this holiday weekend picking up the pieces after the hurricane destroyed most of their home. NY1's Tina Redwine filed the following report.

Bobby Leone spends his days since Hurricane Sandy destroyed the interior of his Gerritsen Beach home seeing what few things he can salvage.

Right after the flooding, Leone and his son moved into a tent on his deck. Now, they sleep in his mom's nearby home. It's without heat and hot water but still livable.

"Sometimes I wake up three o'clock in the morning, one o'clock in the morning," he said. "I work 'til 11 o'clock at night just to get done what I need to get done. If I don't do that, I'm never going to have anything done."

Getting things cleared out seems to take forever, but Leone says the real work begins after this is all cleaned up.

"Now, if this layer of pile wood is bad, you have to rip up the next layer of floor until you find dryness or without mold on it," he said. "So it's like rebuilding a whole entire house."

But first, he has to count his losses.

"This TV right here was $3,000," he said. "This oak futon was at least $2,000."

Leone also lost nearly all his tools for his construction business.

Leone just completed his insurance forms, which are hard to do without his paperwork or computer. He has $5,000 in content insurance, but said the loss for him and many of his storm ravaged neighbors will be unimaginable.

"Let's see at the end what we really regain back," he said. "I don't think it's going to be much."

Leone is scheduled to start a new construction job on Sunday, even though he's still short tools.

"If you have two arms and two legs and this and that, you just keep on pushing and fighting," he said.

He is fighting to rebuild and determined to make this Christmas a good one.
