Food pantries and soup kitchens were hit hard during the recession.

A report by The Food Bank For New York City finds a quarter of the city's food pantries and soup kitchens closed over the past five years.

This decrease is coupled with an increase in visitors, leading to food shortages in nearly two-thirds of locations.

Findings also show locations are hiring less, with most sites reporting no paid full-time workers.

When Hurricane Sandy hit, the Food Bank says organizations responded well, but weren't immune to the storm's power.

The city's network of emergency food organizations is trying to send mobile sites to areas hardest hit by the storm.
