Cardinal Timothy Dolan made his way through Staten Island Saturday, visiting several sites that provided resources to the areas hit hardest by Hurricane Sandy.
He met with local elected officials and volunteers at Holy Rosary Church in South Beach, which provided food and clothing to thousands of victims.
He also toured Mount Manresa Retreat House in Fort Wadsworth, which is providing shelter to to dozens of displaced families.
Officials from the Archdiocese say they raised about $1 million for the victims through parish collections last week.
"I've been commenting that the only thing more overwhelming than the winds and the waves of Hurricane Sandy is the compassion and generosity of the people of this great community," Cardinal Dolan said.
Officials say the money will go towards people's immediate and long-term needs.
