Residents of the Rockaways who are still reeling from the devastation left by Sandy are also spent Monday marking 11 years since American Airlines Flight 587 crashed in Belle Harbor.

The Airbus A300 was headed to the Dominican Republic on November 12, 2001 when it crashed, killing all 260 people on board and five people on the ground.

Since the neighborhood is currently still in recovery mode from the storm, Monday's memorial service took place at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church in the University Heights section of the Bronx.

The church has a strong connection to the Dominican community.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg told those gathered that their commitment to stand together is an enduring promise of support, and says the city is making the same pledge to those affected by Sandy.

Near where the plane crashed in Belle Harbor, relatives also gathered to remember those lost.

"Well obviously remorse, but we lived a good life and we're in positive spirit, and are those painful? I set what life gives us, it just happens, unfortunately," said Henry Ray, who lost his fiancee in the crash. "A lot of people, not just for my wife, but the crew, families that passed away, the neighborhood, as well as us who are still here suffering every day."

The September 11th attacks happened just two months earlier.
