Senator Kirsten Gillibrand visited New Lane Senior Center in Rosebank, Staten Island on Monday and urged Congress to pass a bill that would help seniors stay in their homes.

She called on Congress to reauthorize the Older Americans Act that she co-sponsored last month, which would fund senior programs over the next five years.

The legislation would provide in-home care, housing, nutrition, transportation and social services programs for seniors.

"They want to age in place. A lot of our seniors love to stay in their communities, stay in their homes,” said Gillibrand. "They don't want to have to go to an institution and so we're trying to make sure they have that possibility."

Staten Island is home to about 87,000 seniors with an estimated 30,000 more who will reach the age of 60 over the next five years.

Gillibrand said if action isn’t taken and automatic cuts kick in next year, some senior programs face elimination.
