A Bronx-born scientist is one of two Americans to win the Nobel Prize in chemistry.

Robert Lefkowitz, who was born and raised in the Bronx, and Brian Kobilka will share the $1.2 million award from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

Their studies of protein receptors which allow cells to sense and respond to outside signals is key for developing better drugs.

Lefkowitz, seen above, graduated from Bronx Science High School and attended medical school at Columbia University.

He has been teaching and doing research at Duke University for nearly four decades.

"If you were a fly on the wall in 1973 and now, my daily activities wouldn't look that different," said Lefkowitz. "I'm still hard at it, the lab is bigger, but I'm pretty much still doing what I've been doing, which is science, interacting with my fellows and having a hell of a good time."

Lefkowitz is the eighth Bronx Science graduate to win a Nobel Prize.
