One day after the end of baseball's regular season, former New York Mets manager Bobby Valentine was fired by the Boston Red Sox.

The New York Yankees beat the Red Sox 14-2 Wednesday night, a fitting end to Boston's season of discontent.

Valentine previously had success with the Mets, taking them to the postseason twice before the team faltered and he was fired in 2002.

But in Valentine's one season with the Red Sox, the team finished with a 69-93 record, last in the American League East.

Valentine succeeded popular manager Terry Francona after last September's collapse kept the Red Sox out of the playoffs.

Almost immediately, the former Mets manager and Connecticut resident struggled with some veteran players and then watched as the team was beset by injuries.

Eventually, management gave up on the season, trading away some of its best players and biggest salaries.

Valentine took the Mets to a World Series in 2000 and later he managed in Japan, where he guided a team to the Japanese championship. However, his one year in Boston will be remembered as one of the worst seasons in the history of the Red Sox.
