A New Yorker from a showbiz family is making her mark on the music scene, blending soul, rock, pop and funk. And while she has developed her own style, that doesn't stop Mary C. from reflecting on her entertainment roots and appreciating the lessons she's learned from her family. NY1's Stephanie Simon filed the following report.

Mary C. of "Mary C and The Stellars" has learned a lot from her family. Mom, dad and brother are all in the entertainment biz. But she's creating a look and sound that's all her own.

Mary and her group performed at Joe's Pub recently in support of her upcoming sophomore album "Right On Time." But it's always been a family affair. Her mom, Mercedes Hall, is an accomplished soul and jazz singer. Her dad, Tom Chestaro, was a Hollywood agent and now manages Mary. Brother Anthony Michael Hall is best known as being part of the 80's "Brat Pack" in films like "Sixteen Candles."

"People just kind of knocking at your door, at all hours sometimes looking for your brother, fans. But I think it actually taught me a lot about the business, taught me a lot of you know staying grounded and have fun with it and not take yourself too seriously and enjoy it," says Mary C.

It's hard to believe just a few years ago Mary suffered from stage freight. Luckily, mom had a plan.

"She was like, you know, 'Why don't you start by singing back up for me?' And I was like, 'Oh alright we'll try that.' And from back up went, 'Why don't you just come sing a solo?' And from the solo it was like fingers crossed, 'Am I gonna do this?' And it just kind of went from there," recalls Mary C.

Mary has it all going for her not just talent but looks, lineage and her lucky boots.

"Mix old with new, similar to my music. And the red shoes kind of evolved into kind of like a signature thing and I didn't wanna break the chain of good luck, so they stay on for every show," says Mary C.

Mary C. and the Stellars hits Rockwood Music Hall August 21. Funky footwear is encouraged but not required.
