City Council Speaker Christine Quinn says fast food restaurant Chick-fil-A has no place in New York as long as its president maintains what she calls discriminatory views.
Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy has publicly opposed same-sex marriage and recently told the Baptist Press he supports what he calls the biblical definition of a family.
His comments led the mayors of several major cities including Chicago and San Francisco to call for barring the chain because of Cathy's views.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg has said the city should not hold personal or religious beliefs against any business, but Quinn disagrees.
"We cannot support or patronize corporations that are led by individuals who would invest our money in homophobic or discriminatory endeavors," Quinn said.
Quinn has launched an online petition declaring Chick-fil-A not welcome in New York.
She's also calling on NYU to remove the city's only Chick-fil-A restaurant from its campus.
