Members of the NYPD's 71st Precinct in Brooklyn gathered Saturday to remember one of their own.

It was five years ago on July 14 that officer Russel Timoshenko died.

He was shot during a routine traffic stop in Prospect Lefferts Gardens on July 9, 2007 and succumbed to his wounds five days later.

Commissioner Ray Kelly joined Timoshenko's family and partner for a ceremony commemorating his life and legacy.

Kelly called him a distinguished officer.

Timoshenko and his partner, Herman Yan, stopped three men in what turned out to be a stolen BMW.

Robert Ellis, Dexter Bostic and Lee Woods were all convicted in his death.
