Five of the justices are considered conservative. Four are liberal. Like most politicians, they tend to "vote along party lines." Today, Chief Justice John Roberts broke ranks with his right-leaning peers and single-handedly changed America's health insurance industry. I wonder how he slept last night?
With the unlikely help of conservative Chief Justice John Roberts, the Supreme Court voted 5-4 to uphold President Obama's health care reform law. The justices ruled the Affordable Care Act is constitutional, and the law designed to extend health coverage to more than 30 million uninsured Americans can continue.
The law requires nearly every American to have health insurance or pay a penalty. Lower-income and some middle-class families may qualify for subsidies to help pay premiums starting in 2014. And insurance companies won't be able to deny coverage for treatment or charge more to people with health problems.
The ruling also marks an election year victory for President Obama and his fellow Democrats. At the White House today, Obama said, "Whatever the politics, today's decision was a victory for people all over this country." What do you say?

Hi my name is Shirley, and I believe that Supreme Court’s decision is the first step into leveling out the playing field for the working poor. It seems as if the republican’s feel that we do not contribute to society but that is not true. The working poor class contributes a whole lot to this country, so why should we be denied access to quality health care because of a per-existing health problem or, because we cannot afford the premiums. I think that this is the first step in the right direction.
Celebrating Independence Day and our release from the oppression of British rule, we are now slaves of the U. S. government at the hands of Obama and the Supreme Court. Taxes, fees, costs and regulations will increase; freedom of choice and our rights will decrease. Once again we will have to fight for our rights and freedom. Unfortunately, this time, the U. S. Government is not on our side, but is in fact the enemy.

I'm no fan of Mr. Obama, but in this instance he is 100% correct, and I say God bless Chief Justice Roberts for his reasoning and his well-reasoned opinion. This law isn't perfect, and it doesn't go far enough by half, but it addresses some major and essential issues. And so far, all we've heard from the Republican opposition is "no no no" -- but no proposals of their own.

The Old Republican line died a thousand deaths today---I don't care what it is , if he (Obama) is for it I'm against it, However it is really a great day when all Tea Baggers are P.O.

I have no problem with all having health coverage. My concern is how much MY OWN INSURANCE premiums are going to increase to pay for the health coverage for all? We work for a living and although we have health coverage, the companies deny so many claims for tests ordered by doctors, yet those without insurance, have whatever the doctor asks for, FREE of charge and with no authorization problems. A friend needs an MRI but was denied, yet a non-insured person with the same need, goes into the testing center, free of charge, and gets it done. THERE IS SOMETHING VERY WRONG HERE.
I like the idea of no pre-existing coverage denials. That's a good thing. But again, If it's coming out of the working class's pocketbooks then it is WRONG!!

-if you don't have health insurance, Obama says you make other people who have insurance pay your benefits. THE SAME WITH PEOPLE WHO DONATE LAND ADJACENT TO PARKS AND RECEIVE AN AGRICULTURAL EXEMPTION--THE TAX BURDEN IS ASSUMED BY EVERYONE ELSE--AND THE LAND BECOMES LITTLE MORE THAN AN ANIMAL SANCTUARY AND/OR HISTORICAL SITES, A PRIVATE COUNTRY CLUB FOR A LOCAL FEW. NO dwi CHECKS, AND the rest of us end up paying for their taxes in higher land and school taxes
-SLIPPERY SLOPE--"THE GOVERNMENT CANNOT FORCE PEOPLE TO BUY HEALTH CARE--COMMERCE--BUT THE GOVERNMENT CAN TAX AN AMERICAN BECAUSE THE AMERICAN WILL NEED HEALTH CARE--well, THE SAME FOR OIL --at least in this part of the coutry and HEAP--WILL THE GOVERNMENT BE TAXING HEAP RECIPIENT'S NEXT? AND THEN OTHERS WHO PURCHSAE OIL NEXT?, THEN, ELECTRICITY (ENERGY), THEN FOOD STAMPS--HAVE TO EAT--THEN JUST TAKE EVERYONE'S PAYCHECK ON WELFARE OR NOT AND DIVIDE IT UP--the government will TELL YOU WHAT YOU PAID FOR, or could not afford.
IT'S REALLY COMING TO IF YOU DON'T HAVE ENOUGH MONEY, YOU CAN'T LIVE IN THE UNITED STATES--JUST TAKE ALL THE MONEY, CALL IT TAX OR WHATEVER, TRIAGE, GET THEM OUT OF AMERICA NEXT, AND SHIP ALL THE OLD PEOPLE TO CANADA, SOME TO MEXICO, WHTEVER, GET THEM OUT OF THE UNITED STATES, THERE IS GOING TO BE TOO MANY PEOPLE 65 YEARS AND OLDER ANYWAY SOON, THE GRAYING OF AMERICA TO MAKE ROOM FOR THE IMMIGRANTS.
Comes as somehat of a surprise, you mischaracterized the ruling when you describe it as a penalty (that was Congress's term Roberts deemed it a tax, which would be collected by IRS if you dont have insurance in 2015.) I would prefer if Obama derives benefit fom this and is re-elected. The nefarious southern backwater GOP will spin it as the dreaded socialism or tax and spend. The states can take the medicaid funds and enact the public option like Vermont. Obama has once again accomplished a great program and deserves another term.
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME WHAT THESE AIR HEADS MEAN BY NEARLY EVERY AMERICAN IS TO HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE OR PAY A PENALTY. NOW HOW WOULD YOU DISTINGUISH US AS AMERICANS. NO NEED TO HAVE ANY ID FOR VOTING. YET WE CANNOT GET INTO MANY BUILDINGS OR STORES WITHOUT SHOWING ID. PLUS IF SOMEONE IS STOPPED IT BECOMES RACIAL PROFILING.
THIS DECISION IS A FORM OF TAX AND THIS JUDGE IS A DISGRACE BECAUSE LIKE MANY OTHERS JUST WANTS TO CONTINUE TAX AND SPEND AND CONTINUE TO GIVE ENTITLEMENTS. IF PEOPLE NEED NOT SHOW ANY ID HOW DO THEY GET ALL OF THESE FREE BEES? UNTIL THIS DAY I STILL CAN'T FIGURE OUT HOW PEOPLE GET FREE TRANSPORTATION. IT'S DISGUSTING. I TAKE THIS INTERPRETATION OF THIS LAW AS A THREAT TO ME BECAUSE I AM AN AMERICAN CITIZEN. ALL I KEEP HEARING IS THE LAW THE LAW THE LAW AND MANY PEOPLE THAT ARE NOT EVEN AMERICAN CITIZENS COMPLAIN WHEN THE LAW OR MAYBE ANOTHER ENTITLEMENT DOESN'T MEET THEIR NEEDS THEY PICKET.
THANK YOU JOHN,
I'm not eligible for Medicare or Medicaid. But at the same time, I'm not rich!
Employers with more than 50 workers will have to pay a $2,000 [per employee] penalty "if they didn't offer a set level of health benefits." My job has already kicked us off our "basic," company paid, health care plan a few years back, and now I'm paying $200 a month for an individual plan that's offering less and less and less.
Now they're talking about the co-pays, and the $200 price tag going up!
Under ObamaRomneyCare, If i drop my unaffordable private insurance and file my tax return in 2014 without showing that i have a private plan, i'll be forced to pay a tax penalty. "The size of the penalty will rise over time and eventually reach a maximum of several thousand dollars a year." - WSJ
So they're rationing private plans with the prices going up up up, while stripping Medicare (ObamaRomneyCare cuts half-a-trill) and Medicaid down to the bone as well, with the "death panel" advisory boards and so-forth.
On top of this, they're telling us what to eat and drink. And on top of that, the court ruled that states could refuse Medicaid!
Great decision!!! They got it right! However, it should have been a much wider & favorable margin because of special needs & pre-existing conditions.
I know a lot of people who are happy about this on a symbolic level, but as someone who is unemployed and about to be kicked off of unemployment I have to wonder how are some people so supposed to pay for this, and if they don't how are they going to be fined? Since the State and City decided to shut down my job, I just haven't been to the doctors, and if I have to pay for it I probably won't ever go. For me the reality is we live in a country with a fake Democracy and many people who are religious only for the purpose of thinking it will get them a reward when they die, it's all so much hypocrisy at this point.
As the past few weeks have shown people in this city, state and country are really quick to complain about what people on welfare spend their money on, or wanting people who don't pay bus fare to go to jail. But nobody wants to take a stand to get any type of decent and fair health care system or educational system, it's just everyone for themselves. The apathy and hatred that is breeding now in this country won't be cured by this or anything else.
The upholding of this law(Obamacare) doesn't go far enough to address one thing; medicaid managed care/restrictive HMO's that require a medicaid recipient to enroll in one, with the or else we'll choose one for you, if you don't, along with its restrictive requirements of choosing only one primary care doctor and one hospital affiliated with the plan. The ruling should have made enrolling into medicaid managed care plans unconstitutional for those who had regular medicaid and now enrolled in managed care plans, because of their requiring of choosing only one primary care doctor and only one hospital affiliated with the plan. If they weren't as restrictive like PPO and POS plans, I would have no problem with the Health Care Reform Law, but I do because of this!!
I'm 80% OK with the Supreme court ruling: First, since all the supreme court judges and politicians get very good free health insurance, paid by our tax dollars, why not us. How can we don't desire the same thing?!!! Second, though "penalty" doesn't sound very convincing to American, we still need to come out with a plan to cover the cost for those can not afford to pay. Easy way in is not the easy way out! There is no free lunch. I think everyone should pay their fair-share according to his or her income level.
Li from Upper East Side
John Roberts saved himself. Now there is a chance for the Supreme Court during his tenure to be reasonable and fair rather strident and ideological.
ABSOLUTELY AGREE WITH THE SUPREME COURT RULING AND I THANK GOD THAT OBAMACARES!
I think people are being very short sighted in thinking that the country can afford this health care plan. a close look at socialized medicine in other countries shows people wait a long time for appts and have to buy their own private insurance in addition. I've heard that there's nothing in place to make sure that those who opt out actually pay the fine. I also wonder how many illegals will be tapping into this plan and the rest of us will, once again, be paying for them.
For summer of the West Village, touts communism and socialism.... Is acting as a fear-monger. Americans want the ACA and the benifits thereof, not the rehtoric of the GOP proxies.

This is a historic day for America. I applaud Chief Justice Roberts for being independent, voting his conscience and sticking up for the rule of law. The US was the only civilized industrial country in the world with a totally backward healthcare system. A new day begins...

I think people ought to realize that if companies don't want to take care of their employees, then it's the companies who are the bad guys and not the politician who wants to assure everyone has some type of decent healthcare plan.
I agree with supreme court decision it was the right decision if you think about it. What's the point of having health insurance if you are denial because you was born with a preexisting conditions and not aware of it. I honesty believe that Americans have short term memory loss. "Do your remember March 2009. Congress, the health insurance companies and the president agreed to work together and look who backed out the GOP (Republicans). And John let not forget what the Health insurance company called "Anneta in California trying to raise their rates 40%.The law is not perfect but its a start. I am a Community Health Educator and I've taken a class on Health services and learned that people refuse to see the medical doctor because they've no health insurance, bad experience or lack of understanding of the culture. I believe that this is a huge victory for the president and the people. Its very sad when you see that the Republicans in the house and senate has done everything to destroy president Obama. I find this very disgusting everybody has the right to have access to affordable health care, I have a suggestion for the polls. Its about time American starts taking care of its own people. If we can't take care of our own people then where do we stand as a world power? Why is US rank one of the lowest for access to health care for industrialized country? I also feel that the callers who are against this should take a little more consideration about those who have preexisting conditions if they found out they were denial health insurance because of preexisting condition. The republicans have done nothing but trying to stop the Affordable Health Care Act from the very start. Each time the president tries to pass a jobs bill the republicans would agree only if they could repeal the Affordable Health Care Act same thing with the debt ceiling.
Hey America! Its done. Congratulations Pres.Obama. God bless America. It will be good for us citizens and legal residents. Good call for Chief Roberts. Romney and the Wall street fat cats don't care about us working people. They are PHONY! And Romney and Boehnor and Cantor are bigger PHONIES. Obama 2012.
Jimmy from the Bronx.
This is an immigration, that is illegal immigration issue. Emergency rooms are the only medical arena where illegal immigrants can get treated. The excessive costs of er treatment is part of the issue which is clearly not being addressed. This is a small biz tax and nothing more which should be helpful in restoring an economy that creates jobs only through small biz. Green light a plan to legalize folks that are here, tax them and make them responsible for their health care whether public or private.
Mike in Manhattan
I would like to comment to the comment that the obama care will not include illegal immigrants. I doubt it wouldn't as far as it is. There are a lot of dirty little secrets more Americans are not aware. For instance. I know an illegal immigrant that got emergency medicaid coverage and this is not an isolated case in NY. My mother who is an American Citizen 60 yrs old who works for minimum wave whom I had to take to the ER due to an abscess wasn't able to get medicaid her 2011 income tax is $13,000 and making too much to qualify for medicaid but NY is able to give emergency medicaid to illegals who don't even pay taxes.
If I understand the ruling right, it is a “tax” if you do not buy health insurance. The only things I pay taxes on are things with monetary value, and I pay that tax base on that value. Tell me, what the value of no health insurance? So what is this “tax” base on? I don’t think this is a tax at all.
The supreme court was wrong to sell this law as constitutional by tweaking the intent and verbiage the supporters of the act used when they created it and lobbied for its passage. They clearly said it was not a tax so the justices should have held their feet to the fire.
Liberals and democrats have brainwashed the poor and uneducated citizens in America to effectively guarantee that they blindly votdo to the left on every issue by promising them social services which are an unfair burden on the American taxpayer and are a significant drain on our economy. Those promises do nothing to bring the poor and uneducated out of their social imprisonment but rather further guarantee their at the fringe of society.
When I debate political issues with uneducated, low income citizens who blindly lean to the left with they are surprised to learn that the Republican / Conservative side of the aisle is not their enemy but are actually the ideological party on the side of freedom, liberty and self reliance, we don't believe the constitutional rights, voice and power of the people should trump those of our federal and state officials.
One commenter rightly noted that the healthcare costs of illegal immigrants will be (as they always have been) subsidized by the American Citizens. The administration says the ACA excludes them but in reality when they go to a hospital for treatment they will not be turned away and they will not pay. So my question is who bears the cost? Answer: everyone who pays a premium for healthcare.
The political agenda (of both sides of the aisle) in this country seems to be to lift the poor at the expense of the middle class thereby creating a larger buffer between the rich and the working class. Eventually we will have to pay a premium for each breath of air we take.
Obesity is the reason the u.s. has poor life expectancy, not lack of healthcare. Obamacare is not even in action and healthcare providers have responded by dropping out of markets in advance. There are three options for small biz in nyc right now. The govt can't even handle the pony express.

Having health insurANCE IS NO GUARANTEE OF GETTING CARE, WHEN A BOARD IN WASHINTON WILL DECIDE IF YOU CAN GET A TEST OR MEDICINE YOUR DOCTOR THINKS YOU NEED.
What happens when people don't pay the fine? What about the uninsured and illegal immigrants that use the ER? We are still going to pay the bill. Here's a way to save money; instead of spending millions of dollars on education and healthcare of illegal immigrants, deport them. They are stealing from taxpayers. We'll be fine without them. Slavery is over, we still have cotton. Overhaul the Medicaid system. Make people work instead of abusing it.
You think you are sick now ? Think Again ! When peoples tax refunds are confiscated as fines, money that people depend on, the economy will be crushed. People need these refunds for their kids scool clothing, catch up on bills. These IRS fines are going to get people in serious tax trouble. You think you are sick ? Think again !
It's excellent that this bill was passed. Though it isn't perfect, it is a huge step forward in the effort to provide care to all Americans.
Over the years Insurance companies have profited off Americans illnesses, and those that could afford their services, were often denied help when they needed it with these companies having the power to create "loopholes" to deny coverage. Hopefully this bill can prevent this in the future.
I've been on both sides of the fence- I've been poor and unable to afford insurance, and hoped every day that I wouldn't get sick or injured. My son was covered by the state which comes with many other short comings.
Now I'm employed on Wall St with a healthy salary and full coverage, and have experienced first hand the higher level of medical service offered to those insured, compared to those with no insurance or state care.
The quality of healthcare in the country has been purely fueled by profit, every life having its price, and you get what you pay for. This is immoral. It's clearly been a flawed heartless system for a long time.
Compared to monthly insurance premiums, a $700 annual tax/fine is nothing... It doesn't matter what political party you represent, we are all Americans, and we all deserve quality healthcare. If healthcare for all Americans is not our priority, then we are a country that is weakened and ill, physically and mentally and will continue to grow weaker over time.
This is a backdoor tax; to keep the hospitals above water and keeping medical insurance rates below 7% increases Per year this is the same tactic that was done when Medicare said that they will pay only 80% how much money has these insurance providers made from incorporating these doctors in there plans and not paying the 20% big ripoff why did the vantage plans come later and remember when you walked into the doctors office plans were posted as to which medical insurance they took that is gone by the waist side it was a Nice gesture up to age 26 to be covered by parents that magic see all connect to all pill write down the road.
What a great day today was! The empathy of one conservative judge triumphed over so much indifference and plain mean will.
Bravo to Dave in Jamaica, at least he talks from experience about Germany, unlike other uniformed callers who have no real knowledge of the countries they compare us to. I agree with him that the whole law has to be restructured, but this can happen over time. Let's be practical: you have to start somewhere!
Obama couldn't do better in a *record* filibustered Congress! This is a historical accomplishment for this country. All of the socialist Scandinavian countries in Northern Europe hold the highest standard of living in the word for their citizens - how do Americans think it could be possible they wait on long lines for health care while these socialist countries hold this extraordinary status?!!!
