Parents at a Brooklyn school gathered Monday calling for action amid fears of possibly harmful chemicals in the school's lights.

Parents, community members and elected officials believe fixtures at the Brooklyn New School in Carroll Gardens are contaminated with chemicals known as PCBs.

The city announced a plan last year to remove and replace lighting fixtures in 700 potentially-affected schools within 10 years, but parents say that's too slow.

They're calling on the EPA to step in and conduct inspections.

"The 10-year plan doesn't make me feel good, knowing that he'll be almost ready for college by the time they might get around to it," said Parent Babak Rassi.

"Every day I do struggle when she goes through those doors I worry: am I doing the wrong thing as a parent?" said Parent Alexis Quy.

The Department of Education says its plan to replace fixtures is unprecedented when compared to other cities, and says it's an aggressive plan that will cause minimum student disruption.
