More than 300 firefighters and officers were lost in the World Trade Center attack September 11. NY1's Rick Elmhorst reports on three court officers who are among the missing.

Outside the State Supreme Court on Centre Street, there is a memorial for state court officers Thomas Jurgens, William Thompson and Mitchell Wallace.

Candles flicker with the faith they are still alive.

Inside the courthouse, hundreds remember the three men, who were among 10 court officers who commandeered a juror's bus to rush to the World Trade Center the morning of the attack.

"Nothing was more important to us than going to help," said Senior Court Officer Bill Faulkner who also rushed to the scene that morning. "There was no stopping us. That plane flew over the courthouse - by the time it hit, we were on the bus."

Jurgens, Thompson and Wallace were still in Building Five when it collapsed.

According to their comrades, the three lost officers lived and breathed justice. For them, that meant going to the aid of those inside the World Trade Center moments before its collapse.

Court officers brought candles from the vigil to the sidewalk memorial, hoping the three officers could still be alive, inside an undiscovered pocket of the rubble.

"These guys, that's what they lived for, they lived to help," said Major Reginald Mebane. "And we all gave without thinking."

On Friday, ten days after the attack, officers refuse to give way to despair.

"What can I say," Mebane said. "I'm still waiting for them to come back. I'm still praying."
