Courts-martial for the soldiers charged in connection with the death of Army Private Danny Chen of Manhattan are being moved from Afghanistan to Fort Bragg in North Carolina.
Fort Bragg's commanders have accepted jurisdiction in the case.
The 19-year-old Chinatown native shot himself in Afghanistan apparently after being ridiculed by fellow soldiers in his unit because of his ethnicity.
Eight soldiers face court martial.
City Council Member Margaret Chin released a statement applauding the decision, saying the move was "the only way to ensure transparency and accountability in this case."
Last month, Chin and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn wrote a letter to the Regional Commander in Afghanistan urging the Army to convene the courts-martial to the United States.
