It was a Fashion Week of firsts for designers Jill Stuart and St. John as they unveiled their Fall 2012 collections at Lincoln Center. NY1's Jill Scott filed the following report.
Jill Stuart says fall is all about being mysterious and nonchalant like the leading ladies who influenced her latest collection.
"My inspiration for this line was a collective of inspiring women whose style I admire like PJ Harvey, Susie Bick, Lydia Lunch. The world of Nick Cave's women," said Stuart.
For the first time, Stuart fans will see embroideries with matching prints and party dresses that pair embroidery with lace.
"There's always something for everyone and she dresses women, ya know, really well," said Actor Nikki Reed.
"I think that my mom's latest collection is amazing as always. It's girly and fun and young and pretty," said Stuart's daughter, Sophie Curtis.
The last time NY1 looked at what St. John's creative director George Sharp had up his sleeve, it was at the label's newly renovated store on Fifth Avenue. This time around, the line marked its first runway show at the Ukranian Institute.
"As much as I love the presentation style there's something about seeing girls move in the clothes move that's really exciting I think," said Sharp.
Come summer, you'll be excited to move into fall with Sharp's cashmere coats, wide-leg satin pants, slouchy sweaters and bursts of scarlet.
"Lulu de la Falaise really inspired me this year. She kinda always has, she's such an icon in fashion. She sadly passed away this year, but she was so chic and elegant," said Sharp.
And while Sharp stuck with the knits and wools St. John is known for, he added more leather, real fur and faux fur to the mix.
"I just looked at that collection and thought, wow, that's the answer to many women's dreams. That's what they need to be able to look fashionable, feel smart, but actually a practical answer to all their dressing needs," said Glenda Bailey of Harper's Bazaar.
"I love the classic lines. I love the fact that the materials are impeccable and wonderful. I'm very short, so I like the sleek look. I just love their clothes," said Singer Gloria Estefan.
So whether you're short, tall, or somewhere in between, it seems women will have something to fall for this autumn.
