Despite a federal investigation into his 2013 campaign account, City Comptroller John Liu is still raising money and keeping an active public schedule, and he celebrated his birthday on Monday with a well-attended TriBeCa fundraiser. NY1's Courtney Gross filed the following report.

City Comptroller John Liu's 2013 campaign account may be the subject of a federal investigation, but that does not mean he has stopped fundraising.

For his 45th birthday, Liu hosted a Monday fundraiser at the aptly named City Hall Restaurant in TriBeCa, with the hopes of raising $100,000 during the event.

"The goal, as with any fundraiser, is to raise as much money as possible, obviously within rules and limits, and I think we'll do fairly well tonight," said Liu.

In November, a Liu fundraiser was accused of setting up a straw donor scheme to get over the limit campaign donations to Liu.

Since then, Liu's campaign account has been under increased scrutiny.

Those who attended the fundraiser attempted to brush off the federal inquiry, instead saying the event was a celebration of the comptroller's record.

"He's under investigation and nothing definite has been said about it yet," said Jose Ramos of the Federation of Filipino Americans. "So we just wait and see. I believe what he says, he's innocent of the whole thing."

"I know he's a friend of the teachers and students of New York City and we're happy to come support this event and to also say thank you to john for all the work that he's done," said United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew.

"I came tonight cause I know John Liu is a good man," said Queens Councilman Daniel Dromm. "He's done a lot of good for the city. I've been friends with him for almost 20 years."

High-profile politicos made a appearance, like former City Council Speaker Peter Vallone Sr. and some of the city's major union leaders.

Liu is fundraising, possibly for a run for mayor in 2013. The scandal is said to have damaged his ability to raise money.

Meanwhile other potential candidates, like City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, have already reached the fundraising cap for the primary.

The next fundraising deadline is Wednesday. When NY1 asked the comptroller what to expect from him, Liu said he was just trying to raise as much money as he possibly could.
