New Yorkers are getting their hands dirty to make the city greener.

More than 500 volunteers flexed their green thumbs in Van Cortlandt Park Saturday, one of many events throughout the five boroughs for Million Trees NYC.

Organizers hope to plant 20,000 trees during the one-day event.

"We have our crews out in all of our parks to help maintain the trees, but we also invite New Yorkers to volunteer with us,” said Morgan Monaco of the Million Trees program. “We have free trainings and free tools if people want to come out and help us take care
of these trees after they're planted."

It’s all part of Mayor Michael Bloomberg's initiative to plant a million trees in the five boroughs by 2017.
