Mayor Michael Bloomberg planted the city's 500,000th tree Tuesday to celebrate the halfway mark of the MillionTrees NYC initiative.

The Pin Oak was planted at Saint Nicholas Park in Harlem.

The restoration project aims to make city spots such as school yards, public housing developments, health care facilities and business districts healthier and more livable places.

"Trees really do give us so much. They give us cleaner air, which helps reduce pollutants that trigger diseases like asthma. They give us more shade that helps keep our streets cool,” said Bloomberg.

“When I was growing up in Brooklyn, there wasn't no trees, there wasn't no grass where I was, so I always wanted to see some greenery, so now I get the chance to, you know, donate some trees," said Carmelo Anthony, New York Knicks forward.

The green initiative, which started in 2007, is set to be completed by 2017.
