Mayor Michael Bloomberg dismissed on Wednesday questions about whether he should be footing the legal bills of two of his top aides in the trial of his former political consultant.

Deputy Mayor Patti Harris and former Deputy Mayor Kevin Sheekey are witnesses in the grand larceny trial of John Haggerty, a former Bloomberg consultant accused of stealing more than $1 million from the mayor's re-election campaign.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, the mayor brushed off questions of whether it was proper for him to pay the legal bills of Harris and Sheekey, both of whom defended him on the witness stand.

"Sure, of course I would. Why would I not do it?" said Bloomberg. "Do you hope your boss would pay for your legal fees? Someday maybe you'll find out."

When asked whether he applied for a waiver from the city's Conflicts of Interests Board, Bloomberg replied he had no reason to do so.
