A day after Republican Bob Turner's upset win in a special congressional election, he sat with NY1 Political Anchor Errol Louis for a one-on-one interview.

Just hours after his surprise victory over Democratic Assemblyman David Weprin, Congressman Bob Turner is preparing to take office and will be sworn in Thursday morning.

Despite his campaign's emphasis on sending a message about President Barack Obama's policies, one of the first things Turner plans to do is make sure the home district is in better shape.

"The district has not been represented for three to four months. I think I have to get the right outreach, offices, establish a good community program," said Turner. "This is a complex district. We're working with all the different groups."

In contrast to the often bitter tone of the campaign, Turner said he has spoken to Weprin and called him a "gentleman."

The congressman-elect also heard from top elected officials on both sides of the aisle.

"House Speaker [John] Boehner called me to congratulate me, said he expected to see me tomorrow, sharp. 'Get to work.' And I said, 'Yes, sir,'" said Turner. "I got a nice call from Senator [Charles] Schumer. This used to be his district and it has a special place in his heart in terms of that. And I've been invited to chat with him to learn a little more about it and see how we can work together for the benefit of the district."

Turner also told NY1 he knew he had won the race Tuesday morning, when he saw the large numbers of voters turning out in Brooklyn.
