On Sunday night, hundreds turned out to the "Postcards" memorial in St. George to honor the 274 Staten Islanders who were killed on 9/11.
Prayers, songs and the reading of each of the victims' names were followed by the placing of flowers and mementos placed on the stone profiles that etch the faces of each of the victims.
"I've always thought this memorial is such a graceful representation, both of our yearning for those who we lost, but also for our aspirations to reach beyond grief and pain," said Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
This year, attendees were also invited to write messages on postcards that will be added to a time capsule that will be opened on the 20th anniversary of September 11th.
