Have something to tell us at The Call? Drop us a line at thecall@ny1.com and we'll post it to our blog.

New Yorkers had plenty to say today about the earthquake felt in New York. Since those of us who work on The Call didn't feel it, we'll let you do the talking. Here is a sampling of the hundreds of e-mails we received during the course of the day...

I am a driver for seniors and I just drop the last person off; I was inside my 9 pass van when the van started swaying from side to side like someone was jumping on the back bumper. I thought someone was making a prank on me and I was about to go to the back and yell at somebody but then I notice the UPS truck in front of me swaying too, then the radio said did you feel that? It feels like an earthquake! That's when it hit me and realized we were having an earthquake!

Florinda

I Live in Rosedale Queens... I was checking my emails when I felt the earthquake and My block is right by the LIRR so I figured it was the train just passing by and shaking the house. But i did'nt hear no train!!! SO I then feel my laptop ,table , flat screen and even the ac in the window shaking. I was screaming for my family and we went outside with the other neighbors it was so scary ...totally out of our control!

Jasmine

I was at a doctors appointment when i felt everything shaking, i thought i was about to die when i realized it was an earthquake when a fire man came in telling us to evacuate. i hope no one was hurt.

Hilli, the Bronx

I didnt feel it I was in the shower and my aunt started screaming please help me I'm having a heart attack. She thought she was having a heart attack because the bed was moving and everything around her was moving. A few pictures fell off the wall. We can laugh now but thank god everyone is safe.

Fritz from Astoria

I live in bklyn bushwick housing on the 9th fl, i was on the phone and i all of sudden felt dizzy, then i noticed my tv was about to fall, so i asked my friend who is a nypd officer did he feel that he said yes he was in the car and it was rocking back and forth then the call was cutoff, so i went to check on my mother so i opened the door to her room to find her lookin under her bed, she said someone is movin my bed, i couldnt help but laugh, then i went outside to see if anyone else felt it and to find out what happened, but i didnt take the elevator just incase it was worse then what i expected.

Juan

I heard a loud, consistent clatter, as if people were running down the stairs in my hallway. I truly thought someone broke into my house and I was preparing myself for the worst. Im actually relieved it was just a quake!

Eleni K. from Bay Ridge

Did not feel the quake in FL and was not notified of it until later on after changing channels to NY1. My brother had felt shaking, but he assumed it was me walking up the stairs. Waiting on aftershocks. I am skeptical of feeling one since I did not feel the initial quake. Some rumors going on that Newark NJ and other parts of the state did feel the earthquake.
I am somewhat amused by the reaction of first-time New York residents experiencing the quake. However, though I do understand their concern for safety.

Nico here in Fort Lee, NJ.

I live on the 7th floor of my building. I felt the quake called my husband at work and the first thing he said was turn on NY1! He works for Direct TV, so he doesn't have it at work.

Catherine

Casiopia from Flushing, I was at home watching tv and then all of a sudden everything began shaking! I got really scared and ran out then I saw other people looking out as well. They were all saying it was an Earthquake!

my friends and i were shopping at the seaport when the floor stared shaking like crazy, i thought i was going crazy but then i realized it was an earthquake because everyone started scrambling towards the door to get out of the building, i've never felt anything like this before, i just hope theres not an after shock.

Layla, Manhattan

We live in Whitestone, Queens. We heard first about the earthquake from family overseas, who were watching international news. Then we heard it later from my husband who was in the area of JFK Airport. On 24th (our friends' house) and 17th (our house) Roads close to Francis Lewis Blvd, nothing was felt. Two minutes away by car (10 minutes walking distance) is the Whitestone Shopping Center. It is located at the continuation of Francis Lewis, which becomes Cross Island Service Road (and it is located over the highway - maybe that is why) people, who work there they felt the shaking.

Sincerely
Antigone

My house was shaking and I had no idea what to do. My dog was barking and looking around at the room as I was. This is the first time this has happened to New York and I feel like this is a wake up call. I'm glad everyone is safe.

Nellie from Queens

This is my experience: I got off the phone, when I witnessed plants swaying, the chairs and tables rocking, as well as a crystal collection vibrating. I knew I wasn't on a cruise ship, and wondered if we were really having an earthquake. The spontaneity factor was alarming, and I questioned how long it would last. After last year's macroburst, I am not as surprised. Let's pray there will be no after-shocks. Although rare, the Office of Emergency Management should devise a routine & key facts for such occurrences.

Michael, Forest Hills, NY

I live in bay ridge. I work for the sanitation department. Just got home. Opened the door and saw my 100 pound German shepherd eating a bunch of biscuits my girlfriend had made. They must have fell off the fridge. I don't think he knew about the earthquake. He wasn't watching ny1

Paulie from Brooklyn

Isn't this a coincidence that the earth moved when the D.A. was about to speak? Perhaps there is an irony here. The city of New York doesn't have a plan to pass onto people in the event of this kind of emergency. I hear people say REMAIN CALM but that means absolutely nothing. There must be a plan in the event that this happens again. It is the blind leading the blind.

Brother in Kips Bay

I have a bird and he started freaking out flapping around like crazy in his cage. He was so loud i thought he got out. That's when i looked to see and then felt the bed shaking and saw the door moving back and forth.

My boyfriend was on Wall St. being evacuated while I was home in Crown Heights, Brooklyn with a swaying desk and building. My water bottle was even trembling. I just thought I was really going crazy until I went outside and all my neighbors were screaming from their windows. Scary! Love NY1

Mary

I'm from Great Kills, Staten Island..I guess in some towns it was worse than others because what I felt wasn't as bad as other residents of Staten Island experienced. My doors were jiggling, my bed, my television, lamps. What surprised me more was the shocked look on my daughters face. We just waited it out and thankfully everything is good and everyone is safe.

Mimi

so scary my whole building was shaking back and forth sence i didnt know what was happening i went in to the hallway and it was all moving from looking out the window but thank God no one got hurt

Hesaves

i was on facebook and all of a sudden the chair and the computer started shaking and i was so scared so i screamed did anyone feel that. it was very scary i never experienced this in my life...........

Alexandra from queens

We felt the earthquake very storng here in Ozone Park Queens. The light post were moving alot and the cars on the street were moving alot alot, some kids in front of my house also felt the shake and they saw my house moving from side to side. This is big news, I think all of the callers and emails down playing this event should humble themselves and stop taking life for granted.

Minister Carlos

Speaking of pets' reactions to the earthquake... My cat woke up from her nap, stretched and walked into the other room. My neighbor's cat across the hall was running around his apartment like he was possessed. I was somewhere in between. A little freaked out, but I realized right away that it was an earthquake, so I wasn't worried about what most New Yorkers fear to be "The Worst."

Becky in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn

I live in Astoria on Broadway and sitting at my desk on the computer. Everything started shaking including pictures on the wall moving. Since buses and trucks go along Broadway continually, I thought it was from that at first. After a few seconds the shaking became a little stronger and felt somehow that it was an earthquake, even though I've always lived in NYC. It was scary and I thought of leaving the apartment. I put NY1 news on and it was already being reported that it was an earthquake in Virginia.

Richard

I was cleaning when I started to feel nauseous and light headed I went to the kitchen for a drink of water when all of a sudden my refrigerator started moving .I ran to the living room and stood in the middle there, felt the building shake, that's when I realized it was an earthquake I was experiencing. It scared me and shook me up..

Emily

I work a night job and was sleeping when in the middle of my haze I thought my husband was moving the bed as he was getting ready for work and I was getting quite annoyed and then when I woke up sucking my teeth I realized it was close to 2pm and thought it could not be a dream since it was so vivid! I waited a couple of minutes and checked my phone for messages and then FB gave me the news of an earthquake. I knew I wasn't dreaming..I called my husband and then my grandparents to see if they were okay! I've been on NY1 ever since catching up upon updates and viewers experiences!! Thanks NY1 for the constant update

Elizabeth - queens

I've been enjoying the dramatic phone calls from people.. I must say truly hilarious! However; I didnt feel anything while I was sitting in McDonalds eating lunch. I walked outside to see people nervous cops walking around looking confused. I was leary about jumping on the train but I did and I went home to check on my Motorcycle!

Jessica from Richmond Hill, Queens.

My cousin and i was talking on the phone and my cousin bust out yelling did you feel that and i said my room is shaking and he said my room too.EVERYTHING looked like it was going to fall.so i cut him off the phone and ran outside.

I was standing by my dining room table when I started to feel this shake and a kind of a scratching sound that I assumed was coming from above. Living in Stuyvesant Town we are constantly being bombarded by the sounds of repair and renovation so I was just annoyed. Then my front door started shaking so strongly I wondered if someone was trying to break into my apartment. After everything calmed down I started to think, that couldn't possibly be due to repairs and immediately thought something must have happed in the subways. That's when I went straight to NY1's website to inquire about a disaster or earthquake. And bingo your guys had all the info right away. This was my 3rd earthquake experience but my first one standing up the only one in Manhattan. Thanks for your quick response.

Was up for a few hrs everything was fine around 1:30 or 2 I was in my parents room sitting at the foot of the bed and a "tugging" on the bed like someone was being annoying lead me to ask my dad who was sitting two feet away why was he kicking or pushing the bed. He said he wasn't and for a second I felt the building itself move as the flat screen in-front of me started to obliviously shift. We had time to look at each other get dressed out of our PJs until we felt a second shift that forced a medium sized bell hanging in our living room to ring loudly. We then left the building not knowing what to do in these situation having live all our life in NY and felt like idiots when we saw everyone going about their day with the exception of me and my dad.

I live in the 4th floor. I was in my room when I heard my mom screaming. When I get to the living room I see the couch she is sitting on shaking and my computer stand was also shaking. I immediately told her to move to the nearest door way. I could hear the panic as people exited my building. I gathered my IDs and my mothers belongings and made our way out. Contacting everyone was a nightmare, all the phones were down. Cell phones are useless. I'm seriously considering getting a landline again.

Soraia

it was scary my dog was barking crazy and i knew it was an earth quake and i was so scared and i hid under my living room table but the news i herd calmed me down.

Samuel

I was driving down Northern Blvd in Queens after picking up my car from the autobody shop. I pulled over at 1:51 because I thought it was a botched fix at the shop, either that or someone installed hydrolics on my car. All the sudden I saw people rushing out of every office building. This is when I knew it was nothing wrong with the car. It felt like I was sitting on a Shiatzu Massage Chair. Keep up the good work NY1!

Kevin K from Brooklyn

when the earthquake started I was at the work force place in Manahattan. The building started to move back and forward, A woman yelled earthquake and people started running for the step and the elevator I was glad to get out of that building on the sixth floor. My nerve are still jumping.

Vanessa

Stephen

I thought I was going to die in the earthquake because i was outside just hanging out and saw some trees shaking.

Mo from Queens

I was on 34th with my mom having lunch and I thought it was the train because you always feel it but it was way to strong in macy's. I came home after and all the pictures in my china cabinet came down. :-( I'm happy it wasn't anything worse and that everyone is ok.

Thanks NY1 for the coverage
Mayra from washington heights

I was at my job when tenants I building notified me building was shaking I said o my god very nerve racking.

Henry B.

I'd like to thank NY1 for confirming that it was in fact an earthquake so quicky. I was on the phone with my sister and told her that i thought my building was shaking, and that my couch was moving. She asked if they were doing construction on my building and I said no. She instantly thought that a gas explosion was imminent and tole me to leave. I thought that i might be sick and about to pass out. I turned on NY1 right away and they confirmed that we were in deed having an earthquake at that very moment.

I called my senior citizen mother to make sure she was okay and told her it was an earth quake. She was relived to know that it was and that she wasn't imagining it. And tell that woman from the upper west side that NYers are tough, We are not afraid of many things but mother nature has a way of scaring us !

Hey it's Beverly from queens ny. Im due any day now with my second child. Everything started shaking so I thought it was just a pregnancy side affect of dizziness, and feeling so light headed. Then I saw my ice cubes in my drink, and my tv shaking. I thought it was the wind, but when i got up I felt the floor shake! I tries using my phone but my cell phone was down. First earthquake I ever felt. Hope it's the last

: I had just walked in after getting back to town from a long weekend. Was at the computer checking e-mail when I felt the desk shake. Turned around & saw the mirror shaking. I thought, "Damn, the neighbors upstairs must be doing construction", and went right on with what I was doing lol!

Best regards
Paula

I was on my bed watching TV when I felt the bed shaking, this is not my first earthquake (I felt the one in SanDiego a yr ago), however it was still just as scary!!! I turned on NY1 and they were right on the story! IT WAS SO SCARY! As a New Yorker I am not used to this, the one thing I felt was uneducated - wish I knew what to do!!

SOFIYA

I'm Ariana from South Ozone Park, Queens. I was home alone and then felt some trembling on the couch and I thought it was a truck passing by, but then I looked up and saw my chandelier shaking back and forth for a good 5-8 seconds. It wasn't as severe as others felt it. I still got so scared and looked out the window but no one was outside which freaked me out even more. I thought of it being an earthquake but then I thought, is it possible for NY to have earthquakes? So I checked my facebook and twitter and saw earthquake comments so I changed the channel to ny1 which calmed me down.

Thank God for NY1

This is Khadisha from Brooklyn. I'm on my day off from work and in bed on my laptop. All of a sudden, I felt my bed swaying a bit and thought it was just my imagination because I know NYC has never had an earthquake since I've been here for almost 25 years! Then, it felt as if my house was about to collapse as I saw my dressing table shaking along with the doors on my closet swaying back and forth! Very scary experience! I didn't know whether to pray or run so I just stood still!!!

I live in Williamsburg right by the south bound 278/BQE entrance and felt ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Anyone that says they felt something in this area is overreacting. What damage is there in the ACTUAL place the earthquake took place? I agree w/Patricia from the UWS, in NYC this is a NON-STORY! People are ridiculous calling in w/nonsensical "I was SO scared" stories, this isn't a big deal! Grow a pair NYC, disappointed in everyone's dramatic OVERreaction to NOTHING. Let's talk about some REAL news, now, please. After all it is NYC, there has to be REAL problems to report on.

Brielle

Hey NY1!

We are in Bensonhurst Brooklyn NY and we felt the earthquake very strong. The furniture was moving and it was all very scary. My grandmother is here with me she said she has been in Brooklyn 57 years and she has NEVER felt an earthquake in her life. We were both petrified. Glad it was not worse. Thanks NY1 for keeping us updated immediately!!!

-NicoLina

I was in Queens, laying in bed, watching ny1, all of a sudden my bed starts swaying, I'm familiar with earthquakes coming from Los Angeles... couldn't believe it was an earthquake in NY, until I saw everybody running out of that conference room on NY1, then I started running myself, it was scary...

Willie

We live in Battery Park City. My 5-week-old son and I were in bed. Bed was shaking, I thought it was my mom shaking the bed to help the baby sleep. Then I heard my husband saying, apartment is shaking. Born and raised in Izmir, Turkey, we have been through a LOT of earthquakes 5.6 and more but... This was scarier because we are on the 35th floor and the building kept shaking for minutes...

Glad everyone is ok,
Jayla

At white plain rd and Burke av. I thought my upstairs neighbor was doing something, my bed started to move however the door of my clothe opened and shook for a few seconds so I grabbed my baby And run downstairs.

I was at my neighbors house in New Jersey (right across the bridge) and we were playing just dance on the third floor of a three story complex. For a second I thought it was me shaking the floor from all the dancing, because I saw thw TV shaking and the railing, also the couch. We stopped and I said, "did you feel that?!" And we immediately ran down stairs, but by the time we got there, it was over... Thank god.

This is Marion , I was in Manhattan and I did not felt any earthquake , I rush home to make sure everybody was great and they asked if I was scared and I said no because this is God work , he letting NYC know that we ain't lucky anymore . It's time to for us to get our self together , no more playing around . This really didn't had to be an after shot . He could of destroy us if he waned to. He gave us an wake up call

I was in my apartment with my newborn baby, I had just picked her up to change her..when I laid her on the bed i felt the bed moved like it was a water bed..I quickly looked up and saw the dresser shaking. I picked her up and put the pillow over her head and looked through the window, when i saw people outside I then rushed outside.

Scary.
Cecile

I was standing on a stool patch-painting the apartment in preperation for moving on Thursday. I live next to a higway overpass and the earthquake was a bit more sway than the average daily truck rumble, but it was more funny than anything. My wife stopped packing and went to stand in the bathroom doorway. I saw the neighbors running around outside in chaos. Meh.

Sincerely,
Jon

Patrick from Jamaica NY, I was sitting around my computer. My daughter was watching kipper the dog, when I just see the TV shaking back And forth. So I grabbed her and ran out the door. When I reached outside all my neighbors were standing outside. This is God's message!!

I was listening to the Leonard Lopate Show on WNYC and searching online for textbooks, as fall semester starts for me on Monday. I felt my leg shaking and thought I was going crazy. I also could hear noises below me (as I am on the top floor) and it's not unusual for it to sound like they are throwing their furniture around downstairs. I looked around and then saw the lamp on the nightstand was shaking and could actually feel the building swaying.

It never occurred to me that an earthquake was happening - and then Leonard Lopate mentioned it on his show so I ran to turn on NY1, where I heard about the quake in VA. The good thing about it all was that my cat slept through the entire thing.

I live on the Upper West Side. My friend works in Union Square. How is it possible that we didn't feel a thing? I think everyone in LA is laughing at us. :-)

I felt the earthquake in lower manhattan by battery park city. I work on the 46th floor and the building felt like it was bouncing! I immediately started to evacuate myself and others on the floors. I threw my shoes off, grabbed my flip flops and made a run for it. Was able to catch an expressbus home to bayridge Brooklyn.

Thanks,
Malerie

Hi! It's Youjin. Here is Little ferry NJ! It was scared feeling! It was strong too! My house was shaking .. My window was shaking!! My dog was barking!!! I've never felt it before! Just a little worried.. Maybe it will happened again????

Was sitting at my computer at home in Meiers Corners, Staten Island when the chair began to move under me. Very disappointed with the NotifyNYC mesage which wasn't rec'd until 2:40pm long after every news station was already on the air with the story minutes after the event. This needs to improve so that we are promptly notified during a REAL emergency!

Kevin

I heard the sound of running water, and realized it was coming from the corner in which i have my wine rack, it wasn't water but the wine in the bottles slushing around. i had to hold it up against the wall in order to keep the wine on the rack. Some of the glasses on the shelf next to it fell off onto the floor and broke. All of the art on my walls is hanging crooked.

Amy in Douglaston Queens

I was laying on my rocker/glider, when all of a sudden I felt the chair rocking. I thought it was a ghost, until I saw my plant moving and realized it was an earthquake. I turned the tv to ny1 and saw the D.A. team running for cover!

At first I just thought the building was shaking due to trucks on the BQE, but it didn't stop shaking. I turned from the computer and saw my fishtank on top of my filing cabinent... The water was moving so much there were large wakes in it. I ran over to it and held the tank and the cabinent, pushing it up against the wall. It shook for quite some time. It was very alarming. I hope there are no after shocks!

Hi. I was born in Manhattan and raised in Staten Island. I have never felt an earthquake before. I was sleeping when I was awaken by the earthquake. My dog just picked up his head, but he didn't seem to care much. I thought it was my washing machine because when my mom washes clothing it sometimes shakes the upper floor. I didn't think much of it so i just went back to sleep. I didn't know what it was untill my dad called me about an hour later. I know what to do when there is an earthquake. Had i known it was an earthquake I would have done something. Also I would never that thought it was a terrorist attack. I really hope everyone is ok :)

Sasha, Grymes Hill, Staten Island.

I was watching the News Conference on NY1 and building some puppets on the ground floor when it happened and was surprised to hear the dishes shaking in the kitchen. This was my first earthquake experience. It reminded me most of being on an elevated subway platform when the train stops at the station. Hoping there won't be any damage in the city!

I was at the Library, when I felt a shaking. I didn't know what it was at first. I saw a boy looking around so I knew he was wondering what the shaking was. I hear a bunch of librarians asking one another if they felt shaking. They assumed it was an earthquake. I got scared. A few minutes later one of the libraries had said it was an earthquake, another few minutes she said there would be aftershocks.I got really scared. I left the library to call my mom, cause I was afraid if anything happened to her, but I couldn't reach her, but when I called her again a few minutes later walking away from the library, I got her. I asked her if she felt any shaking and she said yes. I tried to call my cousin, in new jersey, but she didn't ask, and she hasn't.

I was at work typing on the computer and the screen started to shake. Suddenly my whole body felt the tremor, I thought I was going crazy because I am fasting and had not eaten anything all day. I figured I was hallucinating due to dehydration so I kept my thoughts to myself until an annoucnment came on the speaker reminding us to stay calm and that we have experienced an earthquake.

-Tarek

I was reading a book outside in the sun, enjoying the day and I felt the earthquake. I thought it was my vertigo but realized when I stood up that it was an earthquake. I went inside and turned on NY1 and heard about the earthquake.

Hii I am Genesis from New york City Manhattan. When the eathquake happened i was in the bathrrom brushing my teeth and i was trying to balance myself because i thought i was getting dizzy and then i fell. I heard my aunt calling my name. i ran out of the bathrrom to see what was happening and right there the second earthquake happened and i saw my computer shakling, the tv was also shaking, the couch was also shaking. My aunt and i started to walk out of my house and then my mom called to see if we were okay and then was when we heard it was a eathquake. Everyone said they didnt feel it. Thank god we are okay hopefully everyone else is too!!!

I was on the phone with my mother, when I noticed my plants and lamps swinging. I had flash back to the shaking of my apartment last summer during that freak tornado. I'm in crown heights my mother is in flatbush and we felt is simultaneously. My mother exclaimed that before I called she was reading about an earthquake in Colorado. I'm getting an emergency kit as soon as possible! Thank the graces that this was slight. My thoughts go out to people who have suffered worse.

Dian

I had no idea what was going on. i was on my bed and felt my bed shake. at first i thought it was a ghost but my mirror was moving. then i didn't know what to think. i got my cell to call my mom and the call would automatically end. thats when i went on my laptop and Facebook blew up with Earthquake statuses. this will definitely be an experience to never forget.

Was in the middle of cooking when I felt the tremor. Didn't even think of an earth quake. My first thought was that something was wrong with me. Turned the stove off for fear of having a fire. when my sister in Kew Gardens called and told me what was going. I immediately put on Channel 1 News and haven't turned it off since. Hello good day.....I live in Williamburg Brooklyn on a 5th floor building. My mother runs a daycare program from home, we were concern for the children. Lucky I reacted calmly and we decided to evacuate the apartment. We all left the apartment to the street and the children were scared. There were only 2 families who evacuted the building. Only those with children, I am still nervous, and hope this wouldnt happen again. As soon as I came up I turn on channel NY1.
