Bob Turner, the Republican candidate vying for former Congressman Anthony Weiner's seat, gave an exclusive interview to NY1 Monday, knocking both political opponent David Weprin and President Barack Obama. NY1’s Grace Rauh filed the following report.

Republican Bob Turner thought he wouldn’t use signs from his 2010 campaign against Congressman Anthony Weiner ever again, but in politics, never say never.

“I can hardly believe the volunteers didn't toss their signage after the last election,” said Turner. “I had thrown mine out.”

Weiner resigned last month in scandal, and Turner, a retired media executive, is now gearing up for a second Congressional bid. This time, though, his opponent is Democrat David Weprin, a state Assemblyman. The two are fighting for Weiner's old seat.

In an exclusive interview with NY1, Turner signaled that he's trying to tie Weprin to President Barack Obama and run against them both.

“I think Mr. Weprin has a track record: tax and spend liberal Democrat,” said Turner. “He's hooked into the Obama administration and party lines and in philosophy. I don't think there's any getting away from it.”

A spokesman for Weprin fired back, saying that Turner is already repeating tired talking points from Republican leaders in Washington who he says are trying to end Medicare.

On Monday, Weprin picked up support from the Working Families Party. He also has the backing of the Independence Party. The Conservative Party has endorsed Turner.

The race may attract widespread attention given that it's one of only two special elections for Congress this fall. The other is in Nevada.

But if Turner was expecting strong support from the national party, he hasn't seen it yet.

“I've gotten a hearty handshake, a pat on the back,” said Turner.

He said he wants to bring his business sense and pragmatism to Washington to help revive the economy.

“I think Mr. Obama needs to get real,” said Turner.

It's going to be a short, hot sprint to the finish line for both candidates this summer. The special election will be held on September 13.
