If you're anything like me you're thinking to yourself, "I know I want to eat more healthfully, but I just kinda want to ease into it." Well, there's a sandwich for that -- the amazing sabich over at Taim in the West Village. It's a little Israeli falafel shack, and Chowhounds love it.
So, what is a sabich? It is a pita. It is overstuffed with organic hardboiled egg, hummus, tahini, parsley, a cucumber/tomato salad, a slice or two of lightly fried eggplant, cabbage marinated in white vinegar, hot sauce and amba, which is sort of a pickled mango chutney.
This is an "everything but the kitchen sink" sort of sandwich. It's actually very popular in Tel Aviv.
It's a little bit difficult to eat, but it is so good. Every bite is a little bit different. One bite might be a little bit of spiciness, a little bit of tahini. Another bite might be surprisingly sort of crunchy; like cucumbers and tomato and a little bit of mango. It all works, and it's all really good.
And it's healthy. Kind of. You've got your parsley, you've got veggies. you've got mangos -- these things are all good for you. You can even get whole wheat pita instead of white if you really want to. I mean, yeah, there's that lightly fried eggplant. But honestly? Let's just ease into this whole healthy thing, shall we?
So since Taim has only a handful of little seats in their little shop, look for their mobile outposts, which you can find on Twitter -- they're @TaimMobile. Right now they have falafels and smoothies, but as of this week they're going to have sabich, and it's going to be awesome.
