Drivers across the five boroughs now have an extra five minutes after their parking meters run out or alternate side parking expires before they are issued a ticket.
The grace period, which went into effect Sunday, was passed last year by the City Council.
Council members overrode a veto by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who argued chaos would erupt because drivers and ticket agents wouldn't know what time to go by.
Supporters of the law say ticket writers are too aggressive in giving out violations one to two minutes after a meter expires.
The fine for those violations is generally $65.
