The city's Parks Department has opened a new skateboarding clinic in Forest Park today, featuring 26 state-of-the-art ramps, rails, and grind boxes.

The month-long program is already full, but there's a wait list.

Kids ages 8 to 13 can come learn new skating skills for free.

"We just try and help them out and they usually respond pretty well because this is what they want to do," said skateboarding clinic coach Michael Stewart.

"It's really exciting watching them go through the same thing I went through when I started skateboarding," said Nickolai Del Grosso, another skateboarding clinic coach. "And just like seeing them smile when they finally land something they have been trying all day."

Participants say they are ready to learn.

"I'm learning how to balance, and basically that practice makes perfect," said participant Andrew Mirabile.

"It teaches you confidence and to get over stuff that you are scared of doing," said Jaire Berkel, another participant.

The kids hope to one day land some of the difficult moves their coaches have mastered.

"It's really fun and I want to learn to do tricks by the end," said Mirabile.

The park itself is open everyday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Labor Day.
