Stocking a full service food pantry is no small task.

But these volunteers are happy to do the heavy lifting.

They say feeding the hungry is a mission close to their hearts.

"It means more to me because as a child I went without food," said Beatrice Everett, our Staten Islander of the Week. "I know how it felt. I know how it felt when you go to bed hungry."

That's why Beatrice Everett and a team of volunteers donate their time to the West Brighton Food Pantry.

It's where more than 6,000 people turned last year in search of food for their families.

"I feel joy to see those people come in that we could help them," said Sonia Conner, our Staten Islander of the Week.

The food pantry is located in the New York City Housing Authority's West Brighton Houses.

Everett and her team started the operation six years ago after seeing a great need in the community.

"I saw the people who were hungry and didn't want to tell their neighbors or their friends," said Everett.

Those who visit the pantry say its been a crucial line of support during tough times.

"It means a lot for me," said Alton Cannon, a West Brighton resident. "It helps the grand kids out with milk, cereal and I appreciate the rest of the canned goods they give me."

Volunteers open the food pantry twice a month.

They work together to order the food, stock the shelves and distribute the groceries to those who need it most.

"We have so many families in this development who won't tell us that they're hungry but when I tell them to call me don't be ashamed, they call and that's what we do," said Everett.

And so, for nourishing their neighbors with love and compassion, the West Brighton Food Pantry volunteers are our Staten Islanders of the Week.
