As the city mourns the death of a slain NYPD officer, an Eltingville bagel shop is stepping up to support the 3 children she left behind.  NY1's Matt McClure introduces us.

It's a go-to spot for breakfast and lunch. Bagels - R - Us is well-known for its unique lineup of baked goods.

This month, the community staple is serving-up a new item, blue bagels. And workers say they're flying off the shelves.

"At least 7 to 8 dozen... easily in the morning," said Amanda Terlizzi.

Bagels - R - Us is serving-up the colorful breakfast item on-the-house. In return, the shop is asking for donations in honor of Miosotis Familia.

The NYPD officer was shot and killed in the line of duty last week.

"These people go out everyday fighting and fighting to save the community and to see stuff like this it really breaks our hearts. So, if this is a little thing we can give back. This is what we want to do," said Terlizzi.

The store is directing the funds to the Surriya Global Charity Foundation. From there, the local nonprofit will deliver the money to Miosotis' 3 children.

"It'll show definitely that we as public citizens respected what their mother was doing and we respect what the department is doing. So, whatever we can do to support them in their time of need right now is really the ultimate goal here," said Sarah Malik of Surriya Global Charities.

Bagel-R-Us rolled the first batch of NYPD Blue bagels just days after the tragic shooting.

Since then, customers have been flocking to the store in support of the effort.

"They're really going. People really appreciate it. People came from the other side of the Island just to get a blue bagel just to make a donation," said Terlizzi.

Terlizzi and her fellow employees are also stepping-up for the cause.

They've decided to pool their tips and donate to the foundation, as well.

The store's owner has also pledged to match the final contribution.

In total, they've already raised about $1,000.

"It's not gonna bring her back we know that. But just to know that everyone is thinking about her over here," Terlizzi said.

And so, for making sure charity is always on the menu, the Bagels-R-Us team-members are our Staten Islanders of the Week.
