VICTOR, N.Y. — Two people are OK following multiple fires Monday in the village of Victor.

The Victor Fire Department was called to a mixed-use building on West Main Street around 2:30 a.m. for a fire.

When they arrived, they found heavy flames coming from the side of the building.

The two people living in the building's upstairs apartments had already evacuated.

A gas meter eventually caught fire, which prevented firefighters from battling the flames because of the burning gas.

Firefighters had to wait for RG&E to turn the gas off before they could go back inside.

Victor Fire Chief Sean McAdoo says burning off the escaping gas made it safer for people in nearby buildings.

“If we didn't have that and had free flowing gas, it can get collected inside neighboring houses, businesses, etc,” McAdoo said. “That may possibly cause another problem somewhere else.  This way the gas was burning off which made it safe for our fire fighters to watch it.”

He adds they're not sure how the fire started, but that it likely spread to the gas meter.

A second fire started around 9 a.m. around the corner at a home on School Street.

Crews reached the scene quickly and prevented any serious damage there.

But a longtime Victor resident says he never thought he’d see two separate fires in his neighborhood.

“All of a sudden I hear some more sirens, so I was like, ‘What the heck’s going on?’ So I thought maybe the fire started back up, and then it’s down here on School Street. To have two fires in one day–actually in a period of ten hours–is very strange,” said resident Randy Shea.
