In the weeks leading up to Christmas, Stephanie Prendergast was more focused on giving than receiving.

"Christmas is inside and in your heart and everybody has a different meaning," said Stephanie Prendergast, our Staten Islander of the Week.

For Prendergast, the holiday season is all about bringing comfort to Staten Islanders in need.

"If I can bring that feeling to them no matter where they are, who they're with, than I accomplished what I wanted," she said.

That's why Prendergast created the "Pajamas for Pals" initiative.

She collects and donates hundreds of jammies to organizations across the borough.

"Everybody needs to feel safe and warm and cozy and fuzzy on the holidays," said Prendergast.

Prendergast started the effort around Christmas time five years ago after she saw a little girl wearing a tattered pair of pajamas.

"Now we just keep going and going and it's just an amazing thing," said Prendergast.

This holiday season, Prendergast delivered dozens of pajamas to United Cerebral Palsy of New York City.

It was a gesture leaders here say will leave a lasting impression with the kids, especially for their students with special needs.

"A lot of our kids have sensory needs and other types of issues and pajamas are something soft," said Liz Voluz of United Cerebral Palsy of New York City. "It's something that will comfort them in different ways."

Prendergast starts collecting and sorting the pajamas at her home each November where she sets up a command center.

This past year, she donated 800 pairs of jammies to children and adults in need.

She says the initiative is rooted in strong family values.

"We didn't have a lot growing up but we had a lot of love and we had a lot of loyalty and we had a lot of perseverance and we're here and you give back to the community," said Prendergast.

And so, for wrapping children in warmth and comfort this holiday season, Stephanie Prendergast is our Staten Islander of the Week.
