Funeral services were held on Staten Island Thursday for FDNY Firefighter Lieutenant Joseph Maiello.

Hundreds of New York's bravest lined the streets in Westerleigh to honor the veteran.

Maiello died on the job at his Staten Island firehouse.

The 53-year-old was discovered unconscious Sunday at Engine 163, Ladder 83. Maeillo died of heart disease, according to the medical examiner.

"Lt. Joseph Maiello was a veteran member of our department, leader and a friend to so many on this job,” FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said at the service. “He was beloved here on Staten Island with deep roots in his community through his family and his courageous service to others. He died while on duty this week, bravely serving his city, as he has done for more than two decades."

In a statement, Fire Officers Association President Lieutenant James McCarthy said, "This is a heartbreaking day for our department and this union, and we will forever honor Lt. Maiello, and his service to this city will never be forgotten. May he rest in peace."

Maiello was a 22-year veteran of the department.

He is survived by his wife and two children.
