A unique beauty competition is celebrating young women with special needs.

The first ever Miss Special Staten Island/Miss Special Richmond County Pageant was held Sunday in Bloomfield.

Nine contestants between the ages of 13 and 30 competed in several categories such as talent, dress/gown and interview.

"All girls deserve to be queen for a day, so they're so excited about being in front of audience, a captive audience and performing their talent," said

Karyn Turner, the pageant’s founder.

All of the contestants were crowned with a tiara and took home a sash, and trophy.
