Some Staten Island sudents are getting involved in a project to improve New York's water quality, using oysters

The science club at IS 51 took to the harbor in St. George Tuesday. They tested the water and checked on what's called an oyster cage. The cage is part of the Billion Oyster Project . The goal is to repopulate oysters in New York waters by improving water quality. Organizers say the oysters act as a natural filter and have plenty of other benefits. The students are very excited to be part of this mission.

"Just to be able to like have the opportunity to do this is amazing because we get to see what's growing in our waters and try and help make Staten Island better, " said one student.

The goal is to restore one billion oysters to the New York Harbor by 2035.
