More than a dozen paramedics and emergency medical technicians were recognized in New Dorp Monday. The annual ceremony is part of National Emergency Medical Services week. One honoree says the ceremony helps shed light on what paramedics and EMTs do in emergency situations.

"I've always wanted to help people. I just transferred to staten island last summer, it's been quite a change. I've worked in the Bronx. I've worked in Manhattan and Coney island and I'm glad to be here--home. Helping my community," said Ludmila Muller who won the paramedic of the year award.

For National EMS Week, the FDNY will be also hosting a ceremony Tuesday, reuniting first responders with people they helped save.
