On Staten Island some people got in touch with nature by participating in what's called a "senses walk" in honor of Earth Day.

The city's parks department hosted the walk through the wetlands in Ocean Breeze Park Sunday.

Park rangers took participants through the park where they relied on their senses to guide them on the trails. Participants were asked to pay attention to what they hear including the sounds of birds and frogs as they hiked.

Park Rangers say the goal of this hike was to help people appreciate nature and their surroundings.

"Once a person starts to notice what is around them; they're going to be appreciating the earth more, they're going to want to recycle and maybe even composting," said Irena Werner, an Urban Park Ranger with NYC Parks.

Next weekend the parks department will be celebrating Arbor Day by hosting different events including other hikes and exhibits in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens.
