Immigrants on Staten Island are learning about their rights in the workplace.

The city's department of consumer affairs partnered with the nonprofit El Centro Del Inmigrante to hold a Staten Island Immigrant Workers Assembly in Port Richmond Saturday.

The event was held in honor of immigrant heritage week.

The goal is to inform workers and families about their legal rights as immigrants.

Organizers say workers have labor rights regardless of immigration status including the right to minimum wage and overtime pay.

"We have enforcement authority to bring cases if someone's paid sick leave rights or rights to equal treatment are being violated or they're facing retaliation based on perception of their immigration status," said Liz Vladeck Deputy Commissioner, Office of Labor Policy and Standards.
