One Staten Island resident is being recognized by a local lawmaker for raising awareness about rare diseases.

Representative Nicole Malliotakis honored 10-year-old Ava Garnett with a proclamation Wednesday.

Garnett has a condition called Nail Patella Syndrome. It's a genetic disorder that results in poorly developed nails. It can also affect other areas of the body, including elbows and hips.  Garnett's Girl Scout Troop helped her make ribbons to honor Rare Disease Day in February.  She also tries to educate her fellow students about her disorder.

She says the award is significant. "It's a special award that it show me that I've been doing great," adding it's "showing people about rare disease."

Garnett was recently signed to a modeling contract after participating in the 'Runway of Dreams' fashion show.  She will model clothing designed for people with disabilities.
