A historic Staten Island building is severely damaged after police say an elderly man crashed into it Monday night.

Investigators say a 73-year-old man slammed into The Guyon Tavern in Historic Richmond Town.

The building dates back to 1819 and today the tavern is often used for concerts and educational tours.

Police say the man suffered a medical episode that caused him to lose conciousness. They say the driver was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Officials with Historic Richmond Town say they will work with city agencies to restore the building.

"We've got great relationships with cultural affairs, New York City Parks, historic house trust, so everybody is pulling together in order to help save the tavern so it can be open for generations of Americans," said Ken Bach, Interim Executive Director, Historic Richmond Town.
