A man remains in custody after his wife was found dead inside her Brooklyn home Wednesday by her three-year-old daughter, sources told NY1.

Sources said the girl discovered her mother at the bottom of a basement staircase inside the home located at 1172 Sterling Place in Crown Heights around 10 a.m.

Police said the victim, identified as Tonie Wells, 22, was found by officers performing a wellness check at the request of a family member.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police sources told NY1 on Wednesday night that detectives took Wells's husband into custody, and that there had been a number of domestic incidents in the home.

According to sources, he and Wells were fighting outside before he strangled her and pushed her down the stairs.

"Preliminarily, the deceased female has bruising on her neck and it appears as if she was either pushed or fell down the flight of stairs, leading to the basement. Currently, investigators are treating this death as a possible homicide," said NYPD Deputy Chief Michael Kemper.

The Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.

The child was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

She is not believed to have been hurt.

No charges have been announced for the husband.
