140 firefighters were needed Sunday to battle a massive blaze at a Manhattan building, which is next to an FDNY stationhouse, the city fire department said.

Officials said the three-alarm fire started around 3:50 p.m. on 19th St. near 7th Ave. in Chelsea.

It started on the top floor and cockloft of the five-story building, according to the fire department, and the strong winds helped fan the flames.

Video showed heavy smoke engulfing the surrounding area.

The blaze was under control within an hour, but fire department officials said the building was significant damaged.

A firefighter and one other person suffered minor injuries.

The building's residents were evacuated and are now being helped by the Red Cross because they are not allowed back into their homes, as firefighters assess the damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The fire department said that, according to Con Edison, the gas had been off in the building recently and heating had been supplied by oil. There is no confirmation, however, if that was related to the fire.
