A week after two Staten Islanders died from drug overdoses, locals unite to stop the epidemic plaguing the borough.

The Unitarian Church of Staten Island brought the District Attorney’s Office and community groups together to discuss the opioid epidemic on Sunday.

83 Staten Islanders have died from overdoses this year, according to the District Attorney’s office.

Speakers touched on how the epidemic started and resources available on the Island.

Participants also learned to administer Narcan, a medication used to reverse overdoses.

"I hope that they would take away a better understanding of how this affects just ordinary, everyday people in our communities, in our lives," said Ruth Benson, who spoke at the event.
