Back by popular demand, the Staten Island Borough Presidents office again hosted free preventative thyroid cancer screenings Tuesday.

Thyroid cancer is a top 5 cancer for 9/11 responders according to the service provider- Heart Scan Services.

They say early detection through ultrasounds can save lives.

"Generally in a physical, the physician will feel around the neck area but often times the nodules are small and they  can't be felt. so what we do is we give the member tools  to identify the nodules even a very small one," said Marilyn Martinucci, President and Founder of HSS.

The screenings were funded by a city council grant and sponsored by the borough president's office.

Those interested in any future screenings around the boroughs may call the HeartScan Services toll free number at: 866-518-1112 for assistance.
