Seniors across the borough put their mental and physical abilities to the test.

The annual Beatrice Victor Senior Olympics are now underway at locations throughout Staten Island.

NY1 caught up with participants facing-off in a Mah Jong tournament Wednesday at the Manor Road J-C-C.

Hundreds of seniors will also compete in sports like golf, tennis, chess and swimming.

They said the event is a chance for them to stay active and make new friends.

"Everyone needs to socialize and meet people and after you retire there's a whole new world out there and it's really important to get involved," said Linda Laskowski.

"I just enjoy playing and it's a lot of fun and you meet new people when you come here," said Ruth DiToro.

The week-long event ends with a closing ceremony on Friday.
