Police are still looking for the suspect who shot a tourist who they say got lost after getting off the Staten Island ferry. With plans to make the North Shore a tourist destination, many in the area hope this incident doesn't turn visitors off. NY1’s Lindsay Tuchman filed the following report.

Roughly 70,000 people ride the Staten island ferry every day; many of them tourists visiting the borough.

Police said one of them, a 57-year-old man from Italy temporarily living in Queens, was hit by a bullet in broad daylight Sunday.

It happened after he walked off the ferry and got lost on Jersey Street in New Brighton.

The man suffered a graze wound that required stitches.

"I've never wandered off into Staten Island but it's crazy,” said visitor Dominique Abernathy. “It's unfortunate."

Moses Romero is visiting from Mexico and said the shooting is a reminder to proceed with caution.

"As they always advise, keep in the safe areas and try not to do anything strange,” he said.

Local business owners in St. George are hoping to attract more tourists these days, especially with the development of the NY Wheel and Empire Outlets.

However, incidents like the one Sunday make Daddy-O's restaurant owner Greg Fosdal nervous.

"We're dumping billions of dollars into St. George, and Stapleton and downtown Staten Island and then some nonsense like this happens, it's ridiculous,” he said. “I hope they give us a chance, you can go to Park Avenue it happens, you can go anywhere it happens, it just so happens to happen here and we get a bad name."

According to NYPD statistics, there have been 26 shootings in the borough so far this year.

Many local activist groups are working to prevent gun violence, but they're also working to remind people about the realities of Staten Island.

Shereese Mullings is the program director at the CANVAS Institute of Arts, Culture and Civic Engagement.

"I think there is a lot of positive things going on in the neighborhood, a lot of development, a lot of people who are working very hard to make sure that doesn't become the story of this neighborhood,” she said. “So yeah this is an anomaly, a sad one, but it's definitely not the story of this neighborhood."

Meanwhile, police continue their investigation into the shooting of the Italian tourist.
