Our latest Staten Islander of the Week is helping young athletes score big when it comes to staying fit. NY1's Thalia Perez introduces us.

When it comes to soccer, Afrika Gbaguidi has all the right moves.

"When you're playing you have to concentrate, and while you're playing you have fun," she said.

Afrika is one of several young athletes who are participating in a youth soccer league this summer.

The nonprofit H.E.A.L.T.H 4 Youths started the initiative in 2015 to keeps kids active while school is out.

"We get the kids out, involved with each other, and they get an hour of exercise everyday," said Anthony Antonucci of H.E.A.L.T.H 4 Youths. "It builds bonds between the kids."

Each week, experienced coaches lead kids through drills and exercises at Corporal Thompson Park.

The program relies heavily on volunteers like Ameera Collins.

She said seeing the kids enjoy their time on the field keeps her coming back.

"They get gifts sometimes, sometimes they get snacks, they get everything here," she said. "It's just such a happy place to be around."

Collins also donates her time to several other programs the nonprofit runs throughout the year, like an after school reading program.

She said giving back to borough youth is always a top priority.

"I think it's important because it keeps them out of trouble they can get into," she said. "They can do something fun, something that is educational that keeps them occupied."

Nonprofit leaders said the show couldn't go on without her help.

"To have a young person like Ameera who wants to get involved, it's very gratifying," said Heather Butts of H.E.A.L.T.H 4 Youths.

An athlete herself, Collins told NY1 she aimed to teach kids about good sportsmanship, on and off the field.

"You just try to be as good of a human being as possible in all aspects," she said.

The young players said the message is catching on.

"It doesn't matter if you win or lose it's just that you're having fun," said Afrika.

And so, for helping Island youth keep their eye on the ball, Ameera Collins is our Staten Islander of the Week.
